Octagon Toolbox
September 17th, 2019
When I was thinking about the idea of this assignment, I had so many ideas, because I think it is a good chance for me to make something I need by hand. Here are some of my ideas:
I misunderstood the assignment, I thought we have to do five different things in using the same processes. Then I talk to my friends and realized that I was in the wrong way. I started to brainstorm again. I suddenly saw the mess on my table, and I had an idea to make a toolbox to settle all of my stuff on the table.
I need multiple boxes to put all my stuff in, I think it matches the ideas of making multiple things for this assignment. I was thinking maybe I could put five boxes on the table and put them freely. It would be very boring to just make five square boxes, and then I thought that my table was very narrow, and I did not want sharp corners to scratch my hands when I am busy. I did some research online to find some inspiration. I saw an advertisement for diamond rings by accident. I really like the shape of a diamond, it looks like a circle but it is not. The circle shape diamond reminds me I can make a hole in the enter of the box and add another piece of wood for its bottom. I sketched down my initial idea and thought about a size it might be:
The first step is to buy the wood, I went to home depot to buy some woods. But the wood cutting machine was out of service, I cut the wood into the shape I can move around by hand.
Then I moved them directly to ITP, I measure the value and place the woods there.
On the second day, I came to the woodshop at TTP to cut the woods. I found it is dangerous to cut the edges of the wood. The small piece of wood will fly and it will hurt other people in the shop. I was not familiar with the machine and I did not know I can change the angle to cut at first. I cut two small pieces of wood and make it a tool to stable the wood piece.
Then I used the machine to cut a hole in the center of the wood. Ben taught me not to cut it once, it needs to cut by multiple times, and I have to blow the small piece of wood out each time and make sure it will not getting fire.
After I cut them all, I use the machine to smooth the hard edges and I also used some sandpaper to do that.
I glue it and finish.
I am thinking about probably will paint some color on, but I am not sure which color I will use yet. And I am also thinking about if I can use the cutout circle parts to make some coasters.
