Observation of Target’s Paying machine

 

 

They are so many interactive machines in our daily life. The paying machine catches my attention when I go shopping in Target. At first, I did not know how Apple Pay use until I saw my roommate used it. QR code is very popular in China, people only need to use their cell phone to scan the QR code, or show people your QR code, they can successfully pay. 

Apple pay is easier, people only need to use open their apple pay on their phone and tap of the paying screen, they can successfully pay. I went to Target to observed how people use Apple pay. I did not take photos because it is privacy-invading. 

The process to use the Apple pay is actually two screens' interact. The user needs to open their Apple pay app on their phone first, choose a card. Then, tab the phone on the screen. The phone may ask for the fingerprint or face ID to make sure this action is taken by the phone owner. Time spent on this action may longer than paying card or cash. 

I found that when some people who used Apple Pay for many times, they are very skilled, and their facial expressions are very relaxed and calm. When some people are not familiar with Apple Pay, they look nervous to use it. 

Sometimes when an interaction technology does not have a clear interface to make people easy to understand using direction, people will feel confused and nervous. The designer should pay attention to the design of the interface.
